Clelia Knox: 1,001 Word Image Description

First, you see the limits of the image—the “frame.” The image is rectangular with the width being only slightly longer than the height (ex: W 20inch H: 15inch [4:3 ratio]). The size of the image doesn’t matter, the proportions do.


In this rectangular space, a black and white checkered pattern emerges. It forms the background for the entire image; all the elements that will be described all rest on this checkered pattern. There are 7 columns and 8 rows that make up this checkered pattern:

  • The 1st column (starting from the upper-left side of the rectangle) is cut off (1/3 of the column is visible).
  • Not all 8 rows are visible entirely; the 1st (starting from the upper-top of the rectangle) and 8thth row are cut in half by the limits of the rectangular space at the top/bottom part of the rectangle.

Recreating the color pattern: start from the top of each column (starting at 1- go to7). Row 1 begins with white, row 2: black…etc… Row 7: white)


This checkered pattern becomes a carpet within this image. The carpet is not fluffy; it is only slightly textured. The fibers that make it up are tightly knit and are most visible on the white (slightly dirty white) squares. Also, the slight texture of the squares is such that the fibers at the edge of the white square overlap onto the edges of the black square (and vice versa).


The image suggests that a person is sitting on this carpet; the hint comes from the barely visible shape of a single leg (bare leg, no hair/clothing) coming into the rectangular frame from the your (the reader) right.


Imagine that: this person is sitting facing you (your faces are level), legs spread out on the carpet and slightly bent at the knee (like a very poorly done “butterfly” (yoga) pose). You stand up (still facing them) and take a picture looking down on this person. You focus your camera on the carpet visible between the person’s 2 legs (aerial view). You zoom in closer until the only that person’s left inner-knee (remember the knee is bent) (in your camera screen, the left leg is coming into the camera frame from the right).

3 inches of inner thigh and 3 inches of upper calf are visible.

The left-leg-section occupies the right hand corner and right side of the rectangular space of the whole image.

The leg most likely belongs to a fair-skinned person. The skin, although pale, is afternoon-sun-lit; it is light, pinkish beige.

The light comes from the bottom left hand corner of the rectangular frame shining diagonally toward the inner-knee (if you are facing this sitting person, the sun is shining at your back).


You know it is the afternoon sun because there are also apples and these apples are casting shadows in the same diagonal as the direction of the shining light. These 8 apples are granny-smith green. Their hue varies depending on the light/shadow cast onto them. They are dispersed unevenly on the carpet. They are not all standing in the same fashion; some are rolled to the side some are standing with the stem pointing upwards (standing “correctly”) etc. Their positions will be described based on their position on the grid-like checker pattern.

  • The 1st apple: 4 squares down (from top of rectangle), sits on the line between 1st/2nd
    • You can only see its side (top/bottom of apple, invisible)
    • It is illuminated by the sunlight
    • Casts an elliptical-shaped shadow (towards top right hand corner of frame)
  • The 2nd apple: 2 squares down, 2nd Column
    • Top of apple visible (it’s standing “correctly”)
    • It is in the shadow of the invisible right leg
    • No shadow casted by apple
  • The 3rd apple: 5 squares down, 4th Column
    • Lying on its side. Stem points to left.
    • Illuminated by the sunlight
    • Elliptical shadow is cast, the shadow laps at the left edge of the 4th apple
  • The 4th apple: 2 squares down, 5th Column (black square)
    • Lying on its side, stem pointing right.
    • Entirely illuminated.
    • Elliptical shadow is casted, the shadow hides beneath the visible inner-thigh of the left leg
  • The 5th apple: 4 squares down, 5th column (black square)
    • Standing correctly, stem is gone
    • Illuminated for the most part by light
    • Casts an elliptical shadow
  • The 6th apple: 3 squares down, 6th column
    • Standing correctly, stem is visible
    • Illuminated
    • Casted shadow is not visible, also hidden beneath leg
  • The 7th apple: 3 squares down, 7th column (it touches the 6th apple and is slightly tucked under the inner thigh area of the visible leg).
    • Side is visible, top/bottom not visible
    • Illuminated
    • No casted shadow, it is leaning on/ partially hidden the leg
  • 8th apple: 7 squares down, 7th column (close, but not touching lower, inner calf that is visible).
    • Standing correctly, stem visible
    • Illuminated entirely
    • Elliptical casted shadow, part o the shadow hides beneath the inner-calf area of the leg.

Overall Cast/Shadow of the Image:

  • The top left hand corner is covered in a light, blue-grey shadow covering on the 2nd apple and no other apple in that vicinity
  • There is an elliptical-shaped shadow emerging from the bottom of the rectangle onto the number 5 column. The shadow is probably casted by an apple that is not within the rectangular frame.

The scene is soft in color and light. Even the sturdy, tightly-knit carpet seems tender to the touch.

The method of dispersal of the apples onto the floor is unknown. Were they rolled gently towards the sitting person’s left leg? Did he sitting person toss them from a bag onto the floor in front of him/herself? Were the apples on the floor already when the person made space to sit down? Were the apples placed strategically, one by one by any individual?

Perhaps the light isn’t coming from the afternoon. Maybe it is the light of dawn.
